Special Wing, Task Force to be constituted for protection of Hyderabad lakes

Hyderabad:Stricter rules will be included in the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) Act, a special wing and a special task force will be set up to eliminate land sharks, encroachment lakes and water bodies.

The decision was taken by MAUD Minister KT Rama Rao at a review meeting held at GHMC’s Directorate of Enforcement Vigilance and Disaster Management (EVDM) office in Buddha Bhavan on Sunday.

The lakes and ravine in the city will be fixed on a war footing. A task force will be formed for the development of lakes and ravine. The wing is being set up for the protection and conservation of water bodies in and around GHMC boundaries and the task force will co ordinate between line departments including GHMC, Irrigation and Water Board.

The wing will be headed by the Chief Engineer, Irrigation Department and GHMC Official. The task force will consist of official from the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA), Water Board, Irrigation and Revenue Departments.

This wing will protect water reservoirs from encroachment and will also carry out protection activities,statement issued by MAUD department.The Minister said that the government was taking action plan on water bodies and ravine within the limits of GHMC. Those coming inside the Outer Ring Road will also be covered.

In the review meeting, the Minister directed the officials of the line departments to conduct a detailed study of all the lakes and drains within the GHMC limits keeping in view the damage caused by the recent floods in Hyderabad and neighboring municipalities.

Officials were also instructed to study the strength and stability of the bunds and to work with the irrigation department to study.
