demolition of Babri Masjid:black day

Hyderabad: Members of the Muslim community in Hyderabad on Sunday marked the 28th anniversary of the demolition of the Babri Masjid as ‘Black Day’.

In the Old City, people were seen wearing black bands on their arms as a sign of protest. Celebrating this day as “Black Day”, most commercial corners and markets remained closed.

The city remained quiet even when the Hyderabad city police foiled an attempt to organize a protest by activists of the city’s Darasgah Jihad O Shahadat (DJS).

Police detained several DJS activists, including its president Abdul Majeed, from various places in the city.The DJS, a city-based group formed after the demolition of the Babri Masjid, holds processions, rallies and demonstrations every year to commemorate the demolition of the Babri Masjid as a black day.

Police said they were taken into precautionary custody and transferred to several police stations to prevent any processions, rallies or protests in the city on the anniversary of the demolition.

As a precautionary measure, security was tightened in the old city. A team of Rapid Action Force, Quick Force and Task Force has been deployed near the historic Charminar and in front of Makkah Masjid.

In addition, police check posts were set up in various sensitive areas of the city while patrolling intensified in Saidabad, Hussainialam, Lal Darwaza, Darussalam and sensitive areas in different parts of the old city.
