KTR says free drinking water in Hyderabad from January

Hyderabad: Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister KT Rama Rao said that the state government’s free drinking water supply program in Hyderabad would be formally launched in the first week of January.

instruction of Chandrasekhar Rao, no charges will be levied for consumption up to 20,000 liters in the December bills of domestic consumers, adding that 9.84 lakh families will benefit from the scheme.

During GHMC elections, the Chief Minister had announced that 20,000 liters of drinking water would be supplied free of cost to every household in the city.

the Minister of MA and UD convened a meeting with officials of Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) on Saturday. Chief Secretary Somesh Kumar was also present.

Instructions were issued to HMWSSB officials to revise plans, modalities and arrangements for implementation of the scheme.

After the modalities are worked out, the minister will hold another meeting in a few days.

HMWSSB costs around Rs 47 for a kiloliter of water supply and around 468 MGD is supplied throughout the city. Rama Rao told the officials, “Awareness should be created among consumers in the free drinking water supply program.”

Eligible beneficiaries will have to submit an Aadhaar number or undergo Aadhaar authentication as per the state government order.

During the meeting, the minister also reviewed the water supply in the city. Officials said that supply has improved and increased over the years. In line with increasing demand, HMWSSB was also increasing supply capacity annually. This was mainly due to the upgrade of existing infrastructure and facilities in the last five to six years.

HMWSSB officials said that supply plans are being laid out to ensure adequate drinking water supply even in the coming summer.
