Ban on Chinese kite strings

Hyderabad: There has been a decrease in the incidence of birds being injured and dying,in view of the ban on Chinese kite poles. The ban was the result of a campaign launched by the ‘People for Animals’ (PFA) organization.

The officer of PFA Datatriya Joshi said that the volunteers of the organization are conducting surprise inspections at various places along with the forest department official to seize the string ‘synthetic string’.

We have sent volunteers out to identify the places where the Chinese string are being sold. There is a government ban on the sale and stock of Chinese kite string coated with fine glass particles. Our mission is to save the birds.

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) had petitioned the state forest department to ban the sale, manufacturing and storage of kite string prepared with coating of glass particles.

According to Section 15 of the Environmental Protection Act, violators will face 5 years in prison or a fine of 1 lakh or both.

Any death or injury to birds will be considered a victim which is punishable as per the Wildlife Protection Act 1972, which carries a jail term of 3 to 7 years and a fine of Rs 10,000 / -.
