Private schools protest against the shutdown, demand for reopening

Hyderabad: School teachers and other educational organizations demanded a reopening of the schools on Saturday and gathered in large numbers to protest against the state government’s decision to close all educational institutions, calling it “irrational and illogical”.
The Telangana Recognisation School Management Association (TRSMA), which organized the protests, said the decision to close the schools was taken by “fears and rumors”, and there is no scientific evidence to support the state government’s decision.

On Saturday, its members staged a protest outside the Hyderabad District Collector Office.

The school teachers further alleged that the decision was taken from political views and not from any scientific evidence.

The TRSMA has also demanded the reopening of the schools from April 1, as well as the examination schedule for classes 1 to 10. The association has also asked the state government to pay Rs 7,000 per month to private school teachers as compensation for the months during the bandh imposed last year.

TRSMA further requested the government to arrange tablet and internet connections for students in government and low-budget private schools.

School correspondent Ahmed Idris said, “This step has been taken by the government on the basis of rare exceptions of schools becoming COVID-19 hotspots.” We have more than 10,000 schools and 30 lakh students. He said that it was unscientific decision to close the schools on the basis of exceptions.
In addition, Ahmed Idris said that theaters and malls are still open, and there is a huge rush to gather pan shops and liquor shops as well.

He also pointed out that people are gathering in public without following any protocol, but schools have also been closed and it is thought that its management is following all protocols and precautions.
Mount Mercy School Principal Fatima Farooqui said they are not against any government, but are in favor of educating young minds for the “future of our great country”.

She also appealed to parents to understand the importance of education and said, “There is no doubt that the safety of students is important, but you have to trust their safety. We are taking all precautions and measures to ensure that they are safe. “
She further stated that for the last 12 months, schools have been struggling to pay the fees of their employees, apart from other expenses like rent, bills and taxes.

Ms Fatima said that private teachers are now doing other work to feed their families. In addition, she said that more and more schools are closing and they are “being sold like furniture”.
