Virinchi Hospital barred from treating COVID-19 cases

Hyderabad: Telangana government on Friday revoked the permission of Virinchi Hospital of Banjara Hills to treat COVID-19 patients, as a complaint was filed against it by its doctors and staff for medical negligence and violation of treatment protocol.

The complaint was lodged by relatives of a man named Vamsi Krishna, who died during treatment two days ago, following which some of his relatives vandalized the health center.

An order canceling the permission of Virinchi Hospital to treat COVID-19 patient was signed by the Director of Public Health and Family Welfare Department of Telangana, who issued a show cause notice to the hospital after the complaint was filed.

On Friday (May 28) the director’s order stated, “But, the hospital parties failed to present any explanation regarding medical negligence in the treatment of the COVID-19 patient in the show cause notice issued by this office.”
The hospital permission was revoked in accordance with the provisions of the Telangana Allopathic Private Medical Care Establishment (Registration and Regulation) Act – 2002 and the Epidemic Diseases Act – 1897.

The order also states that Virinchi Hospital will not accept any new COVID-19 patients from now on, and so that the patients admitted there do not face any kind of trouble.

It added that protocol should be followed for those who are already undergoing treatment for COVID-19 in Virinchi.

The order of the Director of Health and Family Welfare Department has also issued a strong warning to the Virinchi Hospital till the end. “If it is found that the said hospital is not following these orders, the government will be forced to cancel the license issued to the hospital.”

A day earlier on 27 May, the family of Vamsi Krishna, a native of Nalgonda district, created a ruckus at Virinchi Hospital alleging wrong treatment, negligence and rigging in reports of her death.

His sister Shashi Bhavani Wangapalli, along with a group of 16 people, stormed the hospital and got into an argument with the management over the alleged lapse in the treatment of his brother, which he believed led to his death.

Also, in a separate incident, a private hospital in New Bowenpally has been issued a show cause notice by the state government on charges of causing death due to medical negligence by a citizen of the city.

Notice has been given to Raghavendra Hospital based on the complaint in the state’s Public Health and Family Welfare Department.

The deceased’s son Sumant Saadam also tagged state IT and Industry Minister KT Rama Rao on Twitter, alleging that the hospital management also tortured him. “@KTRTRS Sir, my father died due to the negligence of Raghavendra Hospital New Bowenpally.

They tortured us to give money and said that when my father’s condition is serious, we should take him. Such hospitals will have to bear the consequences of messing with the lives of patients.
