Man lost Rs 8 lakh in black fungus drug fraud, police cautioned the public

Hyderabad: Cyberabad Police on Friday asked citizens to beware of black fungus drug fraud. Police said fraudsters are taking advantage of the ongoing COVID-19 epidemic and also the high demand for drugs and equipment needed to treat those affected by COVID-19 and black fungus disease.

The word cautious from the police after receiving a complaint from a resident of Gachibowli, who said he was scammed to pay more than Rs. 8 lakh after trying to buy medicines for the treatment of black fungus disease.

The complainant stated that he searched for the drug online and was contacted by IndiMart’s website at Amson Medical Stores regarding purchasing injections for the treatment of black fungus disease. In addition, the complainant stated, when he contacted the person via WhatsApp and inquired about Black Fungus Medicine, he was told that the drug dealer was available and he was later asked to initiate payment.

He was assured of delivery of the drug to Hyderabad via flight courier within three hours.

However, the seller demanded Rs. 8.32 lakhs for the first 60 injections and provided his bank account details. The unsuspecting complainant transferred funds from his bank account but the medicine was not received.

When he tried to call the seller, all calls remained unanswered. Realizing that he was cheated, he went to the police.

Cyberabad police said on Friday that fraudsters are posting advertisements on various sites and social media in the name of providing medicines for black fungus etc.


“They are cheating people by giving fake assurances of delivering drugs within hours. A statement from the Cyberabad police said that some fraudsters are also tricking the victims into giving sensitive information like card details, OTPs and cheating lakhs of rupees.

Police have advised people to avoid from purchasing any COVID-19 related medicine from private and unscrupulous sources.
