“Hold your hearts” as Balanagar flyover to be inaugrated soon.

Hyderabad: This could be one flyover, along which you can literally fly over the traffic below. The city’s first flyover that has been designed for a commuting speed of 60 kmph will be inaugurated in Balanagar this month. As of now, the maximum speed limit on all other city flyovers is 40 kmph. The 1.13 km six-lane two-way flyover is being built under the Strategic Road Development Plan (SRDP) at a cost of Rs 387 crore.

The Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) project will ease traffic from the Kukatpally Y Junction towards the Medchal Highway and the Rajiv Rahadari. Traffic will also be decongested at the busy Balanagar Junction.

Another feature that makes the Balanagar flyover different from most other flyovers is a 6mm thick Asphaltic sheet spread between the bitumen layer and slab of the flyover. Similar sheets were laid for the Attapur flyover and after it yielded good results, it was replicated for the Balanagar flyover as well. The sheet absorbs water and protects the concrete and steel of the flyover.

According to HMDA officials, several hurdles were cleared by the Municipal Administration & Urban Development (MAUD) Department while the project was underway. “The works have been taken up as per the directions of MAUD Minister KT Rama Rao, who took personal interest and made sure there were no hurdles pertaining to land acquisition and utility shifting. MAUD principal secretary Arvind Kumar also inspected the site several times to make sure the flyover is completed at the earliest,” said AM Yousuf Hussain, superintendent engineer, HMDA.

The flyover has central medians too and greenery will be developed by the Telangana Forest Department. The flyover will also be illuminated on either side and officials are planning to develop a rain garden under the flyover. Amid rains, the water will drain into the garden through the outlets built at the corners of the flyover.
