Hyderabad : In a Significant move, the department of medical health has decided to bar government doctors from private practice. The rule will be applicable to new recruits doctors with significant changes expected to be made to the Rules of Service, said sources adding that a nod from the chief minister is awaited on the matter.

This is in line with the move initiated by the Andhra Pradesh cabinet, which has already decided to ban private practice by government doctors.

Although doctors are required to stay in government hospitals from morning to evening, many leave around noon to practice in private hospitals. This leaves poor patients without treatment. Some doctors visit PHCs in rural areas only two to three days in a week,” said a source adding that micro review of performance of doctors is underway. The government plans to involve district collectors and senior IAS officials for administering and auditing hospitals.

Notification for appointment of over 3,000 doctors will be initiated after making changes in the rules.
