Long queues at liquor shops compared to polling stations

Hyderabad: Even as the number of voters in the Hyderabad civic elections so far was down by 46 per cent, liquor shops – which were closed till 6 pm on Tuesday evening were witness to a large number.

The owner of a liquor shop in Shaikpet said that the mob started shortly after 6 pm. “The crowd was more than a weekday. Sales were high.”The shops were closed for three days and this time, even the black market was comparatively tight. We searched all over the city, but could not find even a quarter of a bottle.

The State Election Commission has strictly directed all liquor shop owners to close all liquor shops from 29 November to 1 December evening. The election body also said that liquor shops should be closed on December 4, the day of counting till the results are declared.
